... was the last of twelve short stories, published in 1892 as The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. It had previously appeared in The Strand magazine, in June 1892.
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes was the first collection of Sherlock Holmes stories to be published, but it was preceded by two novels: A Study in Scarlet (1887) and The Sign of the Four (1890). It was followed in 1894 by a further short story collection: The Memoirs of Sherock Holmes.
